Diesel A, B and C: differences and which one you need

Although they may look the same at first glance, diesel A, B and C are three different fuels, with different uses, prices and taxation. Choosing the right one is not just a legal matter: using the wrong one can damage your engine or your installation. At Balear Oil, as an official Moeve distributor in Mallorca, we explain it clearly.

Diesel A: for road vehicles

Diesel A is the conventional diesel you find at any petrol station. It is formulated with additives that protect the engine and improve performance, and it is the only one authorised for vehicles driving on public roads: cars, vans, trucks and buses.

  • Use: automotive and road transport.
  • Colour: transparent or slightly yellowish.
  • Taxation: general tax rate.

Diesel B: for agriculture and machinery

Diesel B is tax-reduced and intended for agricultural, industrial and construction machinery. It is identified by a red dye used during inspections. Using it in a road vehicle is penalised.

  • Use: tractors, harvesters, construction machinery, stationary engines.
  • Colour: red.
  • Taxation: reduced rate.

Diesel C: for heating

Diesel C is the heating fuel par excellence. It is optimised for domestic and industrial boilers, offering stable combustion and good thermal performance during the cold months. It cannot be used in engines.

Quick rule: if it moves on the road, diesel A; if it is machinery or farming, diesel B; if it heats your home, diesel C.

How to know which one you need

The choice depends solely on the end use:

  • Private or company vehicle → Diesel A.
  • Tractor, machinery or boat → Diesel B.
  • Heating boiler → Diesel C.
